Antidepressant

The FDA has approved duloxetine
hydrochloride (Cymbalta), an antidepressant, to treat chronic
back pain and osteoarthritis pain. The FDA granted the new
indication based on results of four double-blind, placebo-controlled,
randomized clinical trails in which patients randomized to
duloxetine reported a greater reduction compared with the
placebo group. The approved dose is 60 mg/daily.
Protein
responsible for brain cells growth may lead to new antidepressants
A new study has suggested that a
protein involved in the growth and development of brain cells

who had been depressed and 18 people of the same age.
Yale
Researchers Identify Gene As Possible Cause Of Depression
Yale researchers have identified
a gene as a possible culprit for depression and a possible
target in the future for a new antidepressant. A study published
Sunday in the journal Nature identifies the gene MKP-1 as
playing a significant role in depression. The study's lead
author, Ronald Duman, professor of psychiatry and pharmacology
at Yale, says that it could be a "primary cause"
of the debilitating condition.
Awareness
is key to fighting depression
A spate of suicides around the country

said the pain is deep and remains a source of shame for most
people. But better understanding of the illness is leading
to improved treatment outcomes.
